WHAT ARTIST DO YOU DIG
Igor Acord -sick lowbrow artist and pinstriper
Kehinde Wiley- amazing large scale portrait artist
John Currin- insane satirical figurative painter
Wayne Thibault- paints landscapes and objects of mass culture in the most interesting manner
Egon Schiele- Creepy ass artist whose paintings explore sex and death
Pablo Picasso- no need for explanation And the list goes on...

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN NOT PAINTING
Right now I work. Im a bit of a workaholic. 3 jobs. and Im at my witts end. The city has me driven to make money and over consume. But Im changing that soon. This next year I plan on purchasing a lifted truck, surfing more, spending more time on friends and eating less crap. Buying less crap. Getting back to my roots. Hopefully I can be a bit more balanced and not fall into the rat race again.
So the next time I can answer this question and say when Im not painting I surf, skate, see live music, ride bikes, play the banjo, dirtbike, and work just enough.

WHAT DO YOU DIG
Surfing, Snowboarding, Skateboarding even though I am horrible, Wooden Things, Antiques, Coors Light, Music of all kinds, Banjo, Lifted Trucks, Hot Rods, Seeing new art, Japanese Fashion, Boston Terriers, kids, and anyone with a creative thought.

DeAd SAnTa - My SpIRTs Feliz Navidad

Stove is boiling of fire
Taste of the limited sun vibrations
Santa is dead in the sand
Feathers in the wind
Smells of a holiday desire
Slay is stuck in a wave

Sand between my boots
Noses rub, sun set
Sipping through
Whisper In
Laugh giggle exploding again
A purr upon my heart

Cherry Pie dripping
Red stained lips
Come back, bring out
The red magician’s top hat

Legs are smooth
Egg, cream, rum, and spice
Coffee drips on a tongues desire
Grabbing and holding
Fingers rip and tear

Steam in winter’s dark black night
As fire sends flame through the chimney top
Love moves the melody through the air
Smile as skin dashes through a door
Smell of perfume, a bubble bath
Popping thrills down the drain

Press and push the grab bag bang
Naked images in
Red and Greens
Black and Whites
Stilettos moving left to right

Tick tock click clock
Twist tangle tear us apart
Newspapers stain and torn
Sounds of a jingle the day is old
Dark as night out of  our mind and out with sight

LUNAR ECLISPe

Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse from William Castleman on Vimeo.

Last night was there was a rare total lunar eclipse, which occurs around once a year.
This is when the earth blocks the sun from the moon. The result, which can be seen from many places around the world for over an hour, is a darkening moon as the eclipse begins and a red moon when the sun is mostly eclipsed and the reddish reflection of the earth shows on the surface. www.businessinsider.com

Damien Hirst - For the LOVE of God - Gagosian Gallery

"Damien Hirst: For the Love of God" at Palazzo Vecchio, Florence
on view November 26, 2010 – May 1, 2011

The diamond encrusted skull, For the Love of God, by British artist Damien Hirst, which gained iconic status following its first exhibition in 2007, will be presented at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence from 26 November 2010 to 1 May 2011.

Promoted by the Comune di Firenze, Assessorato alla Cultura e alla Contemporaneità and the Musei Civici Fiorentini, the event was conceived by , is curated by Francesco Bonami and is being produced and organised by Arthemisia Group.

For the Love of God is a life-size cast of a human skull in platinum, entirely covered by 8,601 VVS to flawless pavé-set diamonds, weighing a total of 1,106.18 carats. Set into the forehead is a large pear-shaped pink diamond, known as the Skull Star Diamond. The teeth are those of the original skull, which was purchased by Hirst in London, and dates back to the eighteenth-century.

The work stands in the great tradition of the ‘Memento Mori’, where an image or an object serves to remind us of our mortality. Dutch art historian Rudi Fuchs, writing about the work in 2007, observed: ‘The skull is out of this world, celestial almost. It proclaims victory over decay. At the same time it represents death as something infinitely more relentless. Compared to the tearful sadness of a vanitas scene, the diamond skull is glory itself.’

Palazzo Vecchio is the historic seat of the Florentine government and one of the great masterworks of art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance. Palazzo Vecchio’s lavishly decorated rooms, which were designed by Vasari, hosted the court of Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici. For the Love of God will be displayed in the Camera of Duca Cosimo, which visitors will reach by passing through the Studiolo of Francesco I de’ Medici, usually only viewable by prior arrangement, in a unique encounter between the Medici Palace’s ‘room of wonders’ – a masterpiece of Florentine Mannerism created between 1570 and 1575 - and Hirst’s tour de force, For the Love of God.

Prior to the exhibition in Florence, For the Love of God has only been shown twice. Following its inaugural exhibition at White Cube in London (2007), For the Love of God was exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (2008), where it attracted over 250,000 visitors.

Comune di Firenze, Musei Civici Fiorentini and Arthemisia Group would like to thank Pitti Immagine for its collaboration.

CONVERSE SoHo – Damien Hirst- www.freshnessmag.com

No stranger to the prerequisites of Gross Anatomy 101, artist Damien Hirst’s matter-of-fact depictions of death, in various forms, are not only sensational. They force us to confront the frailty of life itself. All the more ideal to have UK-base artist to take part in the CONVERSE PRODUCT(RED) Collection. An off-shoot of PROJECT(RED), portion of the proceeds from the sales ofPRODUCT(RED) merchandises will go to Global Fund, a charity program for the fight against AIDS/HIV in Africa. Initially released 2 months ago, the special Chuck Taylor All-Star with Hirst artwork sold out immediately. Mainly due to the fact Hirst’s works sell for millions on average and the canvas top was the most affordable variant.
In light of World AIDS Day on December 1 st, the newly opened CONVERSE Specialty Store in SoHo, NYC launched some of the last Damien Hirst collaboration. Now available in very limited quantity at the store.

From early mornings to fresh light of a new day
Light blazes from sutle smooth spoken words
Under white cotton soft twisted sheets
Dreams lift heat into air like balloon traveling toward the sun
Whispers from ones closeness caresses melted moments
Imprints of madness are like nails in the crescent souls of our feet
In a presence of another can this be my lover
Fresh golden lashes of black curls of life
Eyes that create coffee stains in my soul that can wake the sunken souls
hidden are the colors of sweet caring

Balaram Stack, A New-Yorker in Hawaii

When y'think of New York, what springs to mind? Bustling streets, Broadway, Central Park and the Empire State Building? Soon y'could be thinking of something else.

New York State ain't famous for its surfing. But next year could be the year that puts NY firmly on the surfing map. Balaram Stack, pictured here in Hawaii, is part of a surprisingly-large surfing community around NY. The ASP 2011 schedule is no more specific than listing the sixth stop on next year's dream tour as being on the East Coast of the US. But gums have flapped, as they do, and rumour is fast-becoming fact that the event will be at Long Beach in NY. The ASP's time slot for the event falls midway through the Atlantic Ocean hurricane season. ESPN reported that "Since the US started keeping meteorological records, there's been an average of 3.4 hurricanes each September. Facing due south, Long Island sits in very good position to benefit from this groundswell."

Photog Jimmy Wilson is still in Hawaii using borrowed camera gear, after his own was swiped by thieves from the North Shore house he was staying at. Jimmy accompanied the above photo with theses words: "Balaram is the best surfer ever to come from New York and he's only 19 years old. Everyone will know who he is after he gets the wildcard into the WCT event in the Empire State in 2011." Time will tell.

RICHARD SIGMUND
www.richardsigmund.com

What I have come to believe is that my function as an artist is to keep the creative process alive.

Just as an electrician runs electricity, a lawyer applies law and a doctor practices medicine; it is my job to ensure the creative process is alive, e.g., for the scientist as he may use it to further science.

This process can be spiced, that is politically, scientifically, romantically etc. But, to be clear I do not find it to be the responsibility of the artist to solve these flavors. And, I do not believe artistic license and an irresponsible idea evades an ethical position.

As an artist it is my intention that my work be felt deeply. I use street imagery as a point of departure. It has a non-decorative quality, an inherent radicalism (for it embodies constant change) and the educational aspect of common knowledge.

I am supporting an idea of optimism by trying to raise something common into an art world, which rewards uniqueness. I am trying to view what we have in our life with an elevated light, to appreciate what we have without the constant desire for more. I believe this could possibly bring relief.

This work today is my journey and in it I have found a sense of freedom.
